As a working mom, I am very lucky. I work right here in the little village we live in and my little man is 11. No day care costs, no last minute drop offs, no stress. Most working Mom’s aren’t so lucky. Summer vacation is stressful, even for me. A new routine must be established, and activities found to keep the little urchins from getting into trouble when bored.
I think our nation needs to rethink the school year. When public schools were first opened, our society was largely agricultural and children were needed during the summer months to help on the farm. Times have changed and there is no longer a need for three month long summer vacations.
Think about it, our country is way behind educationally. Traditional schools spend time every fall reviewing material that was forgotten by students during the summer months. And the last month of the school year is a battle to hold the student’s attention. So out of a 9 month school year our children are only really learning about 6 of those months. The standard year around schools go 6 weeks on 2 weeks off.
And that brings me back on topic. I tend to ramble if ya didn’t notice by now. It’s a hell of a lot easier to impose on relatives and friends, or even pay for day care for 2 weeks every couple of months, than it is for 3 months at a crack, and a week here and there for the holidays. Now to just convince the school board….
