Yeah, that’s right… I’ve got a degree in social work and yet I’m tend bar 5 days a week. Don’t get me wrong, I am not looking down on the profession, I’ve been a proud member for close to 20 years. It’s hard work, both physically and mentally. It just pisses me off that I spent 6 years taking classes and yet I’m not working ‘in the field.’
Of course everything I learned in that 6 years comes in very handy behind the bar! Social work/bar tending are after all, closely related! Now I just happen to understand the reason’s behind many of my regulars behavior’s. And I always love the look they get on their faces when I tell them I hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Social Work.
I remember clearly the dumb founded look on one regulars face. He’s an old friend of my Dad’s, a royal pain in the ass, and one of my favorites. The 1st thing he asked was what the hell I was doing behind a bar. After I explain that the powers that be haven’t seen fit to increase the work force in that field, even with the economy such as it is, he moved on to say that he understands now, why I am so good at what I do.
It’s a compliment I cherish. It makes all those hours of studying worth while. Even if I never hold a position in the social work field I’m still making a difference in people’s lives. On a regular basis. And in my own way!
